Here and Now Fashion Festival

AURORA DU's graduate collection the "Unknown Familiarity" explores the human recognition experience of strangely familiar and unfamiliar creepiness, also known as the uncanny. It discusses the possibilities of inheriting the antiques while redefining the newness by introducing otherness in her fantasy hybrid creatures. Her vision of modern renaissance is embedded in up-cycling materials, bio-leather textile, and various techniques including laser cutting, 3D printing, and fabric printing. This collection is featured on WWD cover article of "Class of 2020".

The uncanny places the otherness in the ordinary. The deformation, twists, and un-acceptance discover another type of beauty when all the criteria of beauty are disturbed. To decontextualize the visual perception, it is a process of reconstructing of recognition of ordinary and imagination. The uncanny, psychology term brought up by Freud, is the psychological experience of something as strangely familiar, rather than simply mysterious. The uncanny lays in the range of hardly defined emotion: strangely familiar, which is a disturbance of the known, and seduction to the unknown.

Aurora Du is a graduate with honors from Parsons School of Design Fashion Design BFA. She was born in Beijing, China, and has spent the past four years studying at Parsons School of Design and Central Saint Martins in Womenswear, with courses in Fashion Management. Aurora’s well-traveled experiences provide her immersive opportunities to hybridize inspirations from anthropology, history and psychology to provide a ultimate fantasy of curiosity.
Her vision of modern renaissance includes womenswear, products and accessories. aurora works with up-cycling materials which embody the footprint of time, and bioplastics textile to mold into organic biomimicry appearance. she work with laser cut to engrave textures and design print patterns to print her own fabrics.
