fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10200 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/fashion.parsons.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Sophie-Time-Magazine-227x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>This past Friday a few dozen intrepid lecture-goers slushed through the sleet to hear the entire Parsons Colloquia, originally spread over two days, in a matter of hours. \u00a0The panel for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newschool.edu\/parsons\/subpage.aspx?id=87631\" target=\"_blank\">Sophie Gimbel<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px\">, the last of the evening, was a refreshingly relaxed affair.\u00a0 The panel host and curator of the new exhibit, Ms. Charleston, informally chatted with Ms. O\u2019Hagan, the former VP of PR and Special Events for Saks Fifth Avenue, about American couturier Sophie Gimbel.\u00a0 Charleston briefly explained the inspiration behind the exhibit&#8211;namely, that no one knows about Gimbel\u2019s exquisitely crafted work\u2014 and then turned the stage over to Ms. O\u2019Hagan.\u00a0\u00a0A stylish woman with perfectly coiffed short white hair and dark eyeglasses above a navy scarf and gold-brooched jacket, O\u2019Hagan knew and worked with Gimbel from the time Gimbel ran the prestigious Salon Moderne at Saks through her death at age 83.\u00a0\u00a0Gimbel\u2019s character, style and personality from the 1920\u2019s to \u201860\u2019s unfolded in a series of off-the-cuff anecdotes, partially guided by questions from Charleston and largely by O\u2019Hagan\u2019s entertaining stories.\u00a0\u00a0I had expected a basic discussion of the exhibit and Gimbel\u2019s contribution to fashion, but instead an unexpectedly intimate portrait of the designer developed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fashion.parsons.edu\/2013\/02\/10\/parsons-colloquia-sophie-gimbel-fashioning-american-couture-afterparty\/exhibit-inside\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10202\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10202\" src=\"http:\/\/fashion.parsons.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Exhibit-INside-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a>Some portions dealt with the public persona, like Gimbel\u2019s landmark achievement as the first American designer on the cover of Time Magazine, but the bulk spoke to the more intimate.\u00a0 Her \u201clove-match\u201d (O\u2019Hagan) to Adam Gimbel, her adored black-tie dinner parties, lunches at the bridge table, home-grown recipes inspired by nightly cookbook readings.\u00a0 They spoke of her style: a woman\u2019s knees and shoulders should never be exposed at the same time and, \u201cA woman and her waistline should never be parted\u201d.\u00a0 As O\u2019Hagan succinctly put it, Gimbel is best described as, \u201c\u2026the most elegant woman I\u2019ve ever known.\u201d\u00a0 Behind the panelists images of Sophie and her clothes played on three gigantic screens.\u00a0 The crowd, a mixture of ages but leaning heavily towards students, listened with interest, laughing at the stories and leaning closer to hear when O\u2019Hagan strayed from the microphone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fashion.parsons.edu\/2013\/02\/10\/parsons-colloquia-sophie-gimbel-fashioning-american-couture-afterparty\/exhibit-front-window\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10201\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10201\" src=\"http:\/\/fashion.parsons.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Exhibit-Front-Window-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>During the afterparty, as everyone gathered into cliques and sipped glasses of wine to fortify themselves for the brisk walk home, Charleston went into more detail about the three-year exhibit process.\u00a0 The most difficult part was \u201c\u2026contextualizing the garments\u2026\u201d and trying to express her research through images rather than words in a small amount of space.\u00a0\u00a0 When asked why Gimbel and other American couture designers are not recognized, Charleston explained that it happened \u201c\u2026after WWII when the fashion editors went back to Paris and really ignored American couture, American designers\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0The exhibit will show at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newschool.edu\/johnsondesigncenter\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sheila C.
