Genspace, the interdisciplinary community biotechnology laboratory in a Brooklyn, accepted a proposal by Parsons student Sarah Schachtschneider for a thesis project related to bioart. Genspace is the first community lab of its kind. Schachtschneider will begin work–some of which is featured below–this fall.<\/em><\/p>\n

I am very passionate about sustainability and believe in uniting\u00a0my interests in biology and art with the work I do in fashion, as\u00a0I believe fashion has the potential to be more inclusive of\u00a0unconventional and alternative approaches, and challenging\u00a0existing ideas of our bodies and their relation to our\u00a0environment.<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/a><\/p>\n

I have had the unique opportunity of becoming\u00a0involved in bioart (art created from biological material and\u00a0concepts) which inspired me to begin working with living\u00a0organisms to sustainably grow materials and raise awareness and\u00a0interest in science, technology and the implications of\u00a0biotechnology within society. With a strong desire to continue\u00a0creating biological artwork, I have decided to pursue this\u00a0passion for my senior thesis project.<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/a><\/p>\n

In order to make this possible, I need access to a biological\u00a0laboratory open to unconventional uses of science. I am very\u00a0excited that my proposal to Genspace, the community biotechnology\u00a0laboratory in Brooklyn, was recently accepted, which will allow\u00a0me to work on my thesis project, facilitating the research and\u00a0growth of biomaterials.<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/a><\/p>\n

Genspace is the first community lab of\u00a0its kind, with members ranging from artist to biologists, with a\u00a0common passion for science. In their space, they have a\u00a0biological safety level 1 laboratory, which is the standard among\u00a0universities. In the space I will be able to experiment with\u00a0living organisms to create materials, and have access to the\u00a0equipment necessary to execute this safely, while considering the\u00a0ethical implications of the work I am doing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
