Meet our November 2014 Parsons School of Fashion’s Student of the Month, Sarah Hoshikawa!<\/p>\n

Here is a Q&A we did with her and some samples of her work. We hope you enjoy getting to know Sarah, and we would like to offer her a big congratulations on all she has accomplished so far!<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> What is your name, or any nicknames you go by?\u00a0Sarah Hoshikawa. Some people call me \u201cBaby Ho.\u201d<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Where are you from?\u00a0McLean, Virginia.<\/p>\n

\"Thesis<\/a><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> What brought you to Parsons?\u00a0Growing up, my favorite thing to do was drawing girls wearing different outfits created by me. I have wanted to pursue fashion design ever since I discovered my love of drawing. At fifteen, I got my first sewing machine and began making clothes.\u00a0Teen Vogue\u00a0was my favorite magazine when I was younger, and I also had the\u00a0Teen Vogue Handbook, where I first read about Parsons. Parsons is considered one of the leading schools for fashion – and I knew I wanted to be in New York \u2013 so I applied to Parsons!<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> What special courses are you taking?\u00a0I am currently taking Textiles and Machine Knitting, which are both great for developing fabrics and materials. I am really enjoying learning about different techniques in both classes, and expanding my skill set with textiles. It\u2019s very inspiring to experiment with different materials and to see how one technique of fabric treatment can result in so many different creations.<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong> Why do you think you were selected as Parsons School of Fashion Student of the Month?\u00a0It was a pleasant surprise to be selected, and I am so thankful! I try to push myself with every project, and for my thesis I am trying to discover a new approach to design that I have not tried in the past. As a designer, I am working on experimenting with the design process specifically, as well as playing with the idea of the body within a 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional space.<\/p>\n

6.<\/strong> If you could offer one piece of advice to an incoming student, what would that be?\u00a0Don\u2019t limit yourself. Be open to trying new things.<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong> What is your Instagram?\u00a0@sarahhoshi<\/p>\n

8.<\/strong> What are you going to do over the weekend?\u00a0Working on my thesis. And drinking hot chocolate, since it\u2019s getting chilly!<\/p>\n

9.<\/strong> How would you describe your experience so far as a Parsons student?\u00a0It has been the craziest, most challenging, inspiring, fun, rewarding, experience I\u2019ve ever had! I have grown as a designer, learned so much, and have met so many wonderful people who have supported me along the way.<\/p>\n

10.<\/strong> What is one of the most important things you have learned\/experienced at Parsons?\u00a0Even when it seems impossible, keep going. Be confident in your work!<\/p>\n

11.<\/strong> What keeps you motivated when there is too much work load?\u00a0I think about why I am here and what I want to achieve. It definitely can be very challenging, but that is how you become stronger!<\/p>\n
