My thesis is about recreating my grandma\u2019s memory by tracing back the development and globalization of
\nChina in the past 30 years through her eyes. The various characters my grandma went through are the focus of
\nmy thesis. By also using the fabric that she brought in 1980s, my collection is using the combination of
\ntraditional fabric and new fabric to produce this nostalgic feeling. I want to create an narrative system by using
\nthe timeline of my grandma\u2019s life. Four characters that she went through between 1950s to 1980s. Growing up
\nin the south part of China, she was a farmer. In 1950s she went through culture revolution as an factory worker
\nand communist socialist. Then she moved to inner mongolia and live as part of villager towards the end of
\nculture revolution. With narration as my main focus in my design philosophy, my design aesthetic focuses on
\nusing this tool of storytelling to make the audience understand the story and meaning behind it even more.<\/p>\n
Remember The Forgotten:
\nI remember growing up with the earth.
\nI was very close to the soil.
\nMy days were spent working the land
\nFinding comfort in the monotony of our daily tasks
\nI remember the freedom of the fields
\nEndless rows expanding on forever
\nI remember running through them
\nuntil my legs would give out
\nI remember the golden dawns
\nWatching my brother\u2019s leave for school
\nMy place was in the home,
\nTheirs was beyond our farm.
\nInner Mongolia became our new home
\nThe winds would scream through the valleys
\nI remember washing my blistered hands,
\nthe dirt from the our long days caked underneath my fingertips.
\nWe were brought here to empower the uneducated<\/p>\n
Empower the worker
\nThey told us to go to the city
\nThe air felt thicker here
\nI remember the ever-present propaganda,
\nFists raised in the air, everything gleamed red
\nThe days blended into one
\nI wake up
\nI lace my boots
\nI put on my uniform
\nI was a soldier for my government
\nA fate I couldn\u2019t escape<\/p>\n
Everything else subsumes the greater purpose
\nBut I had forgotten what I was fighting for.
\nTime eventually passes
\nAnd my memories continue to fade
\nBut I remember our community
\nI remember the hope
