Reclaiming the Black Birth Experience

Black Maternal Mortality and Traditional Midwifery

Project Description
Reclaiming the Black Birthing Experience advocates for the return to midwifery models of care that center Black women and birthing people. It is underpinned by research addressing the historic criminalization of black midwives, the contemporary high morbidity & mortality rates for black women & birthing people, and the underrepresentation of black people in the midwifery profession today. By creating a community of black midwifery students, professionals, and advocates that want to organize, the project looks toward integrating racially-concordant midwifery-led models of care into perinatal health care, democratizing and reintroducing community and celebration back into the birthing experience.
