Remembering to Forget

Project Description
This thesis reimagines the Hunters Point Library not just as a place that preserves memory, but as a spatial and sensory journey through memory itself. Inspired by the subculture of record collecting and the neurological connection between music and memory, the project proposes a new typology of library where sound, texture, light, and circulation work together to support cognitive recall and identity. Each floor represents a life stage, inviting users to move through a looping path that mirrors the fragmented, nonlinear experience of memory in individuals with Alzheimer’s and cognitive impairments. The ramp becomes the guiding element, escorting visitors through sensory moments that evoke emotion, spark recognition, and restore dignity. Rather than a silent archive, this library becomes an activator of memory; an inclusive and accessible space that listens, resonates, and remembers alongside its visitors.
