Blossom is case study proposes the development of a digital platform, Blossom, tailored for girls aged 14 and under, offering a safer and more moderated introduction to social media. Emphasizing individual identity over trend creation, the platform integrates verification features to lessen the need for guardian moderation, granting young users greater freedom for self-expression and idea exploration. Through efforts to mitigate common issues like exploitation, addiction, and the male gaze prevalent on other social media platforms, the aim is to foster a deeper understanding of social media’s purpose in a more exclusive environment. Motivated by a desire to explore the connection with psychology and designing interfaces for social media, this project seeks to understand the effects of design choices on user behavior, drawing from previous research in applied psychology. It hopes to address existing social media challenges, particularly among younger female users, by implementing design strategies to reduce negative behaviors like doomscrolling and comparison. Through this case study, the impact of design decisions on user experience and engagement will be explored, with the goal of offering a safer and more fulfilling social media experience for young users.
