Astarte is a Brooklyn-born artist and storyteller working at the intersection of design, technology, and film. Her work explores how creativity evolves in a world shaped by AI, blending bold visuals, interactive media, and emotional storytelling. Through her projects, she challenges traditional narratives and invites audiences to engage with new possibilities.
This project explores the interaction between human and AI-generated content. It focuses on how AI can be used to create scripts for films, and how actors, directors, and viewers perceive the difference between AI-written and human-written material. Through interactive voting, users can guess who each person believes is AI. AI OR US also highlights the potential impact of AI on artistic industries, particularly film, and explores whether AI could become a tool for enhancing creativity or a threat to employment in the arts.
With a year of time to fully develop this idea, 4 iterations have been created, becoming an intriguing web series that has caught the interest of many. The playful nature and mystery of who is who have sparked conversations that need to be had.
How it works
At the end of each film, viewers are left with a qr code to make a decision on whose script they believe is AI-generated. At the end of voting, only then will everyone elses votes be visible to you.
In order to design our characters, my team strategically selected images of our voice actors and designed cartoon versions of each of them.
Script Process
I developed each script by meticulously choosing who I’d like to be the AI. Once picked, I wrote a script that followed my characters throughout different short stories and left the ending as an opportunity for viewers to guess who was who. For me to generate the AI script, I left an empty space open for ChatGPT to fill out and did not edit its responses. The only thing I said was “no” or “be more human” if necessary.
As the study went on, the AI only got more and more used to the idea, getting harder, and almost impossible for some to decipher. Of course, this highly depended on the scripts and what was occurring within the film, but no matter what, it was never easy.
