This project began out of an interest in the atmospheric environments of games. The way the natural world is built and the structures placed tells an intimate story that not only deepens the existing storyline of the game but elevates the player experience in that it feels like the world already exists/existed somewhere in real life rather than a space that was made solely for the sake of it. Although my game changed a lot over the course of its development, it is still an atmospheric environmental game at its core with a focus on exploration and interaction.

Panotopia is a short, single-player atmospheric exploration game where you must navigate a dark and hostile dystopian world through stealth. The main plot behind the game is that the players find themselves in an alien world where its inhabitants live under the rule of a mysterious and powerful entity known as “The Light”. Players must talk to its prisoners, hide from its sight, and figure out how to escape. The gameplay includes short puzzle solving to advance to new areas of the map with light elements of storytelling.

The main hook of the game was actually a mechanic I intended to only use at the beginning- but it ended up being a driving force behind the overall gameplay. When the player first starts the game, one of the first things they see is a tall, imposing tower of light looming over the entire map. They learn next that the light hurts them if they step in its gaze, and must use stealth to explore the world. When I made this mechanic, I was aiming for it to only be used at the beginning of the game because it merely served as a plot device- the player would eventually be caught by the light and get taken to the next level where the game actually starts. However, due to time constraints and that play testers found the light mechanic especially engaging, it eventually became a core component of the game.
