scent-as-a-letter-of-self
the relationship between scent and lived experiences is inherent, and it piles in a linear expansion; this is the culmination of what makes us→←us.
scent-as-a-letter-of-self is a multimodal, participatory self portraiture that explores how scent can construct + translate a self, using letters as the messenger.
the experience is split into two parts.
part_1: participants are invited to lean into the scent emitting device, which is automatically triggered in close proximity.
the released scent is a custom formulation, transposed into olfactive notes based on dissecting 26 letters to myself written since 2016.
part_2: after engaging with the scent, participants are then prompted to write a letter to me as the scent. the letters are ejected onto the projected web sketch. the more letters people write, the more fleshed out this responsive self portrait becomes.
certain words trigger a background with my letters overlaid over each other…. but those words are to be found, not told ~
the way scent is ephemeral

never in definition
we are constantly in a state of iteration, creating extensions of ourselves as we ebb and flow with time. and the more letters we write, the more we can paint a portrait that truly mirrors ourselves.
