Order of the Hollow Star is a third-person narrative game that explores what it means to be human in a world where every action is silently judged. Built in Unreal Engine, the game features a custom emotional AI system that tracks player choices and subtly alters NPC emotions creating a sense of invisible consequence. Inspired by the Nemesis System and Detroit: Become Human, the project evolved into an interactive exploration of perception, morality, and psychological pressure.
This clip is a screen recording of the beginning of Order of the Hollow Star—its dynamic NPC emotion system. As the player makes choices, even subtle ones like tone of voice or hesitation, trust and loyalty levels shift in real-time. NPC behavior changes based on accumulated emotional states, with dialogue options being blocked, unlocked, or recontextualized depending on past interactions. This system is creating a persistent memory of the player’s actions that mimics real human relationships.
This video showcases one of the game’s early trial environments, where the player has to solve a memory puzzle and figure out the environment around them. The absence of direct feedback invites players to reflect on their own choices and their perceived impact on others, reinforcing the game’s central themes of being watched but not always understood.
