Scute Hunt! is a literacy preparation toy for 2-5 year old kids to pick up descriptive words at home with parents/caregivers by using objects from their surroundings.

In the current generation of growing reliance on screen-based devices such as smartphones and tablets, the decline in literacy rates is alarmingly increasing every year. As our attention spans get shortened easier than ever due to constant exposure to toxic media and short-form content, we need to come up with a preparation for younger children who are growing up to be future learners and navigate the complexities of our surroundings. Early age literacy, along with third-grade literacy plays a significant role in lifelong literacy.

Students who perform below grade level literacy tend to have higher dropout rates and face more challenges in navigating as they get into adulthood. Although schools (public and private alike) are making efforts to provide their students with personalized literacy instruction and care, there are still gaps between the levels of literacy in one classroom, which is also mentioned as a primary challenge for educators.

As a solution that can be used at home with parents for 2-5 year old children, ‘Scute Hunt!’ is an early age literacy preparation toy to accelerate vocabulary development that focuses on descriptive words and adjectives curated for the target age group. By observing the objects at home from their surroundings, this toy facilitates a playful session between parents and kids to build a stronger bond and understanding of the looks and feels of the objects around them. The physical activity of touching and observing the objects and picking up ‘Scute word cards’ with descriptive words on it to match with the actual object aims to let children learn more words using multiple senses.
