The Do School, partner with Parsons ELab, Announces the Students Selected for the INNOVATE NYC 2017 Program
New School students will tackle a community mobility challenge together with other select students from across the NYC university ecosystem, guided by the Do School.
Innovate NYC empowers NYC university students through a learning-by-doing approach by solving real-world problems. Rhea Alexander, director and founder of ELab, serves on the board of advisors and is a founding member of Innovate NYC in the consortium of universities.
NEW YORK, N.Y – Parsons ELab & The New School are happy to share that students, Akshati Merish and Fulya Turkmenoglu, have been selected for the 2017 Innovate NYC program.
This landmark program run by the DO School and supported by the Newmans Own Foundation is a collaboration between 11 NYC area universities to empower students with skills for the 21st century economy.
Now in its second year Innovate NYC utilizes a proven approach originally developed by the DO School for Oxford University and leading organization such as Siemens, Daimler, and the United Nations. Within the program, our students will develop entrepreneurial methods, work with diverse groups of world-class practitioners, and create real change. Parsons ELab is proud to partner with Innovate NYC to promote impact entrepreneurship through design-driven methodologies.
This year’s Challenge centers on innovation in mobility. More specifically, the goal is to create a community centered ride-sharing solution that encompasses the entire city, while remaining economically viable. The challenger, Brooklyn Navy Yard aims to boost New York City’s economic vitality by creating and preserving quality jobs, growing the City’s modern industrial sector and its businesses, and connecting the local community with the economic opportunity and resources of the Yard. To do so, they are doubling the number of jobs within the Yard by 2020 from its current level of 7000. However, how can the Yard do this without adding a single new car to their parking lots – as parking is already at maximum capacity?
This June, the Innovate NYC students will work with renowned experts and top social change makers to develop and implement a hands-on solution that they will deliver a solution to this problem to the Yard. For the Yard, then Innovate NYC offers a critical way to solve a core operating challenge. For the students participating the program is a chance to develop real world, 21st century skills for careers in social impact.
Commenting on this method of experiential education, Martha Kanter, former Under Secretary of Education of the United States and current Distinguished Professor of Higher Education at New York University remarked that “innovation and collaboration are critical skills to advance any nation’s prosperity and competitiveness in the 21st century. The DO School is the energizing force behind a new and vital cross-sector collaboration to solve complex challenges and empower students in their future endeavors.”
