The gathering took place on Saturday May 13th, from 1:00 to 4:00pm at the Sunset Park Interim Public Library (Community Board 7 space). Drawing from the insights offered at previous community meetings organized over the few months and the input of Sunset Park residents through participatory-action research, the research team presented potential scenarios for the community program, the organization of the space, and the leadership model of the space to be run by the community for the community. Voces Ciudadanas encouraged participants to discuss and share how their organization and themselves could contribute to the new program. Assembly Member Marcela Mitaynes and Council Member Alexa Aviles participated in the session and shared their support. They incited community members to continue this organizing effort. Voces Ciudadanas will continue the campaign over the summer, working with multiple civic groups and community organizations toward the re-programing and activation of the space in Fall 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los resultados del proceso de investigaci\u00f3n acci\u00f3n-participativa, incluyendo la nueva propuesta comunitaria y modelo de corresponsabilidad, fueron presentados en una Asamblea Comunitaria. La reuni\u00f3n tuvo lugar el S\u00e1bado 13 de Mayo, de 1:00 a 4:00 pm en la Biblioteca P\u00fablica Interina de Sunset Park (espacio de la Junta Comunitaria 7). During that session, an empty week schedule and over the following week, the research team collected input gathered in different ways and moments related to the community program. Considering the input and the participatory-action research results, a potential community programming was drafted as well as potential scenarios. Both were shared with community members and leaders in the Community Forum on Thursday, April 13th.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">When we talk about community programming, we refer to a possible schedule of activities, programs, and actions taking place in the space over the week and weekend. When we refer to potential scenarios, we mean possible ways to configure the activities, programs, and actions mentioned above in the space considering the opportunities and limitations of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El 25 de Marzo se present\u00f3 el reporte de investigaci\u00f3n en una asamblea comunitaria organizada por Voces Ciudadanas en Sunset Park. En la siguiente semana, el equipo recopilo informaci\u00f3n en diferentes formas y momentos relacionados con el programa comunitario. Teniendo en cuenta los aportes y los resultados de la investigaci\u00f3n de acci\u00f3n participativa, se elaboro una possible programaci\u00f3n comunitaria, as\u00ed como escenarios potenciales. The first one was the production of a Sunset Park Sociogram to collectively map the social relations of the community and identify potential collaborators. On Febraury 9th, a community workshop was organized where about 30 community members participated \u2014residents and community leaders. The second one was the creation of the Voces Ciudadanas Oral History Project. This ongoing endeavor seeks to unearth the voices and memories of Brooklyn\u2019s Sunset Park residents who have been involved in creating community spaces for the benefit of all. Its goal is to foster community learning from past strategies, methods, and motivations to inform future imaginaries and concrete possibilities leading to the creation of new community spaces to address structural inequalities. Lastly, the research team organized a Public Faculty, a participatory technique involving radical listening through interventions in public spaces. With the help of volunteers from Voces Ciudadanas, the voices of over 85 community members were inscribed in small pieces of fabric and connected with yarn. Residents\u2019 needs and imaginaries were woven in public as a gesture of unity and empowerment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante Febrero y Marzo se llevaron a cabo tres actividades participativas. La primera fue la producci\u00f3n de un Sociograma de Sunset Park para mapear colectivamente las relaciones sociales de la comunidad e identificar colaboradores potenciales. El 09 de Febrero se organiz\u00f3 un taller comunitario donde participaron alrededor de 30 miembros de la comunidad, residentes y l\u00edderes comunitarios. La segunda actividad fue la creaci\u00f3n del Proyecto de Historia Oral Voces Ciudadanas. Este esfuerzo, que continua, busca revelar las voces y los recuerdos de los residentes de Sunset Park que han estado involucrados en la creaci\u00f3n de espacios comunitarios para el beneficio de todos. With its wide range of resources, people of all backgrounds and interests gain access to books, digital media, and online databases. They also offer various services such as literacy programs, job search assistance, and technology training, making them a valuable resource for community members who might not otherwise have access to these places. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\" style=\"font-size:15px\">In Sunset Park, the library is a critical community asset. A branch of the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), the library has undergone major changes and upgrades since its opening in 1905. As demand increases, the library closed for rebuilding and is currently operating from an interim space in the former courthouse on 4201 Fourth Avenue, sharing the space with Community Board 7 and the NYPD office. Upon completion of the new structure, the library will move back to its original location, leaving the current interim library location vacant. This presents new possibilities and imaginaries to transform the space into a place for the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">In the summer of 2022, Voces Ciudadanas began organizing Sunset Park\u2019s immigrant community to keep the space the Sunset Park Public Library is temporarily using while the new library is constructed at its original site. They began a community survey which was shared in person and online and has reached over 830 participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">In the Fall of 2022, members of Voces Ciudadanas and other community leaders began conversations with public agencies and NYPD, who owns the building housing the interim public library, about the fate of the soon-to-be empty space. The NYPD agreed to look at community proposals to consider keeping the south side of the building for community use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Considering a scheduled plan to open the new public library, possibly over the Fall of 2023, leaders of the organization invited faculty and graduate students from the MS Design and Urban Ecologies program at Parsons School of Design to collaborate in the visioning and design process.\u00a0In the Spring of 2023, this community-university partnership began working together and drafted a work plan from February to May, divided into two phases \u2014 one involving participatory-action research and the other strategic design.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Las bibliotecas han servido a las comunidades como centros de aprendizaje, investigaci\u00f3n y descubrimiento; son cruciales para promover la alfabetizaci\u00f3n, la educaci\u00f3n, y la libertad intelectual. The gathering took place on Saturday May 13th, from 1:00 to 4:00pm at the Sunset Park Interim Public Library (Community Board 7 space). Drawing from the insights offered at previous community meetings organized over the few months and the input of Sunset Park residents through participatory-action research, the research team presented potential scenarios for the community program, the organization of the space, and the leadership model of the space to be run by the community for the community. Voces Ciudadanas encouraged participants to discuss and share how their organization and themselves could contribute to the new program. Assembly Member Marcela Mitaynes and Council Member Alexa Aviles participated in the session and shared their support. They incited community members to continue this organizing effort. Voces Ciudadanas will continue the campaign over the summer, working with multiple civic groups and community organizations toward the re-programing and activation of the space in Fall 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los resultados del proceso de investigaci\u00f3n acci\u00f3n-participativa, incluyendo la nueva propuesta comunitaria y modelo de corresponsabilidad, fueron presentados en una Asamblea Comunitaria. During that session, an empty week schedule and over the following week, the research team collected input gathered in different ways and moments related to the community program. Considering the input and the participatory-action research results, a potential community programming was drafted as well as potential scenarios. Both were shared with community members and leaders in the Community Forum on Thursday, April 13th.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">When we talk about community programming, we refer to a possible schedule of activities, programs, and actions taking place in the space over the week and weekend. The first one was the production of a Sunset Park Sociogram to collectively map the social relations of the community and identify potential collaborators. On Febraury 9th, a community workshop was organized where about 30 community members participated \u2014residents and community leaders. The second one was the creation of the Voces Ciudadanas Oral History Project. This ongoing endeavor seeks to unearth the voices and memories of Brooklyn\u2019s Sunset Park residents who have been involved in creating community spaces for the benefit of all. Its goal is to foster community learning from past strategies, methods, and motivations to inform future imaginaries and concrete possibilities leading to the creation of new community spaces to address structural inequalities. Lastly, the research team organized a Public Faculty, a participatory technique involving radical listening through interventions in public spaces. With the help of volunteers from Voces Ciudadanas, the voices of over 85 community members were inscribed in small pieces of fabric and connected with yarn. Residents\u2019 needs and imaginaries were woven in public as a gesture of unity and empowerment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante Febrero y Marzo se llevaron a cabo tres actividades participativas. La primera fue la producci\u00f3n de un Sociograma de Sunset Park para mapear colectivamente las relaciones sociales de la comunidad e identificar colaboradores potenciales. El 09 de Febrero se organiz\u00f3 un taller comunitario donde participaron alrededor de 30 miembros de la comunidad, residentes y l\u00edderes comunitarios. La segunda actividad fue la creaci\u00f3n del Proyecto de Historia Oral Voces Ciudadanas. With its wide range of resources, people of all backgrounds and interests gain access to books, digital media, and online databases. They also offer various services such as literacy programs, job search assistance, and technology training, making them a valuable resource for community members who might not otherwise have access to these places. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\" style=\"font-size:15px\">In Sunset Park, the library is a critical community asset. A branch of the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), the library has undergone major changes and upgrades since its opening in 1905. As demand increases, the library closed for rebuilding and is currently operating from an interim space in the former courthouse on 4201 Fourth Avenue, sharing the space with Community Board 7 and the NYPD office. Upon completion of the new structure, the library will move back to its original location, leaving the current interim library location vacant. This presents new possibilities and imaginaries to transform the space into a place for the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">In the summer of 2022, Voces Ciudadanas began organizing Sunset Park\u2019s immigrant community to keep the space the Sunset Park Public Library is temporarily using while the new library is constructed at its original site. They began a community survey which was shared in person and online and has reached over 830 participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">In the Fall of 2022, members of Voces Ciudadanas and other community leaders began conversations with public agencies and NYPD, who owns the building housing the interim public library, about the fate of the soon-to-be empty space. The NYPD agreed to look at community proposals to consider keeping the south side of the building for community use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Considering a scheduled plan to open the new public library, possibly over the Fall of 2023, leaders of the organization invited faculty and graduate students from the MS Design and Urban Ecologies program at Parsons School of Design to collaborate in the visioning and design process.\u00a0In the Spring of 2023, this community-university partnership began working together and drafted a work plan from February to May, divided into two phases \u2014 one involving participatory-action research and the other strategic design.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Las bibliotecas han servido a las comunidades como centros de aprendizaje, investigaci\u00f3n y descubrimiento; son cruciales para promover la alfabetizaci\u00f3n, la educaci\u00f3n, y la libertad intelectual.
