Parsons Housing Justice Lab’s Director Gabriela Rendon has been selected by doctoral students as the keynote speaker for the 18th Annual Krueckeberg Doctoral Conference in Urban Studies, Urban Planning, and Public Policy at the Bloustein School at Rutgers University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference will take place this Friday, March 13, as a full-day event organized by doctoral students for doctoral students engaged in research on urban planning, urban studies, health, and public policy across disciplines and universities in the NJ\u2013NY\u2013PA tri-state metropolitan region. Named in honor of Professor Donald A. Krueckeberg, the conference celebrates his long-standing commitment to doctoral education by creating a forum that highlights cutting-edge doctoral research in urban studies, planning, and public policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the keynote, Rend\u00f3n will share the research process behind her forthcoming book, Defiant Neighborhoods: Rise, Revitalization, and Gentrification of Immigrant Communities in Latinx Brooklyn (NYU Press). The book explores how space is claimed and contested in New York City, examining how urban decline, revitalization, and gentrification have been addressed from the ground up by Latinx New Yorkers. Centering grassroots organizing, community planning, and everyday acts of spatial resistance, the conversation highlights how Latinx communities have shaped Brooklyn\u2019s neighborhoods and asserted their right to remain and belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
