Soft Parade, organized by collection curators Silvia Rocciolo and Eric Stark, brings together for the first time seminal works from the New School Art Collection that reflect the university’s historic commitment to supporting socially engaged art making, from David Hammons’ African American Flag and Nancy Spero’s Female Bomb to Joseph Beuys’ La Rivoluzione Siamo Noi. A exhibition of works created by award-winning photographer Phil Borges in partnership with CARE that depict inspirational stories of ordinary women who are catalyzing change in communities spanning the world. As part of CARE’s effort to raise awareness about women’s empowerment in the fight against poverty, CARE approached Borges about documenting its work. Borges first visited CARE projects in Ethiopia in November 2004. Over the next eight months, he photographed and interviewed women in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Guatemala, Togo and Ghana.
