Chavajay\u2019s words invite us to rethink our relationship to notions of time, official<br \/>\nhistories, collective memory, and erasure.<\/p>\n<p>Following 36 years of internal armed conflict fueled by U.S.-backed military regime(s) and a state of recurrent colonialism, Guatemala seems paralyzed in the midst of a fragile democracy and a volatile economy. Nevertheless, over the past two decades, artists, thinkers, and socially engaged practitioners in the Central American nation have developed inventive new spaces, collectives, and resourceful practices that challenge traditional ways to think and experience historic memory.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Guatemala Despu\u00e9s\" href=\"http:\/\/guatemaladespues.org\/\">Guatemala Despu\u00e9s<\/a> is a collaborative curatorial project between The New School and Ciudad de la Imaginaci\u00f3n (Quetzaltenango, Guatemala). It seeks to showcase artistic practices from Guatemala that reclaim suspended histories, reveal invisible injustices, and engage in dialogues that relocate our imagination of the present.<\/p>\n<p>This exhibition emerged through a yearlong process of co-investigation, fieldwork, interviews, workshops, and an open call for proposals from artists in and outside of Guatemala. The outcomes<br \/>\nshowcase artistic investigations by multidisciplinary teams of nearly 40 artists, social scientists, and community activists, as well as influential works by established Guatemalan artists.<\/p>\n<p>The artist collaboratives participating in the show include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vida y Memoria (Rogelio Can G\u00f3mez, Edgar Esquit, Beatriz Cort\u00e9z, and V\u00edctor Hugo Ajquejay);<\/li>\n<li>Justa memoria (Emmanuel Yac, Reyna Marisol P\u00e9rez Calder\u00f3n, Josu\u00e9 Caleb Mendoza Camey, and Jes\u00fas Hern\u00e1ndez);<\/li>\n<li>Puntos co-existentes (Jorge de Le\u00f3n, Nora P\u00e9rez, and Gerardo del Valle);<\/li>\n<li>Placeres Subterr\u00e1neos (Franco Arocha and Claudia Molina);<\/li>\n<li>Memoria, historia en disputa (Flor de Mar\u00eda Calder\u00f3n P\u00e9rez, Francisco S\u00e1nchez, Daniel Xocop, Dulce Cabrera, Josu\u00e9 Abdias Otzoy Juvilajuj, and Sandy Hern\u00e1ndez);<\/li>\n<li>Sitio-Se\u00f1a (Quique Lee, Iris Castillo, Andrea Monroy, and Paulo Chang);<\/li>\n<li>Hipnosis (Regina Jos\u00e9 Galindo and Alfredo Ceibal);<\/li>\n<li>\u00bfMe escuchas? (Jessica Kair\u00e9 and Daniel Perera);<\/li>\n<li>La metamorfosis de la devaluaci\u00f3n(Fernando Poy\u00f3n, Angel Poy\u00f3n, Ang\u00e9lica Lorenzo, and Mar\u00eda Jacinta X\u00f3n);<\/li>\n<li>\u00bfGuatemala despu\u00e9s? (Madelyn Gonz\u00e1lez, Jhonathan G\u00f3mez, and Jenny Dale);<\/li>\n<li>El olvido que no sabe que es olvido (Yasmin Hage, Alejandro Flores, and Camilo A. Luin); and<\/li>\n<li>Saturno: a\u00f1o 174 (Julio Serrano, Enrique Pazos, Julie Grajeda, and Irene Mart\u00ednez).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Chirmol is a Guatemalan sauce made from smashed roasted tomatoes and spicy peppers; in oral culture to say chirmol is to speak about something chaotic, convoluted and complex, but which simply tastes delicious. The transnational collaboration between The New School and Ciudad de la Imaginaci\u00f3n has turned into a \u201cchirmol\u201d of artistic energies and curatorial perspectives, reframing memory and the performance of urban agency while situating indigeneity and otherness, as reflected in Guatemala Despu\u00e9s.
