Prompt: For this project we were asked to choose specific materials to work with and to consider how these materials can be used to communicate our personal idea about the essence of time in an art or design work.
For this project, I wanted to express the essence of time through the art of getting lost. As such, I explored New York City like a simulation game; a unique approach that I felt would guarantee new experiences that I have yet to obtain since moving here as an international student. I drew inspiration from Monopoly instruction cards, where I followed a list of vague rules which would lead me to different places. Thus, the possibilities as to where I may end up at the end of the game is infinite; the player is allowed plenty of flexibility to find niche and hidden places around the city that was not previously known. In this way, the player’s goal is to wander and discover new things.
As I traverse, I collected leaves, receipts, and patterns from the places I visited and used the found materials to create my “board game”, depicting the process of my journey. Throughout my exploration of the city, I documented the places I saw with videos and images, and the final piece is a mixed media film that contained found footage from my journey as well as the art making process of the finished game.
