Prompt: The prompt was to draw a still life consisting of objects selected for their significance in different areas, be it psychological, personal, political etc.

Over the weekend after the project was assigned, I celebrated my birthday. Rather than drawing the fleeting celebration, I opted to depict the aftermath of the celebration which included a half-eaten cake, opened presents, and discarded candles scattered around the composition. I felt that there was an intimacy in showing the clean-up and understated nature of a celebration. In addition, the objects that are shown each had their own significance in the celebration that occurred before which I felt fit the prompt. I used charcoal for the piece as I felt it would best capture the temporal nature of celebration and events.
