How do we translate a thought into a thing?<\/em> <br><br>\u2013 from Natalia Zubko\u2019s Space\/Materiality course description<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I do not come from a design background and I have always been intrigued by the idea of \u201cteaching\u201d space.&nbsp; It seemed like a very conceptual premise, like studying black holes or zero gravity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, Natalia Zubko is here to set me straight.&nbsp; She talked with me about her practice, her projects and what her students take away from the challenge of making.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zubko is Part-Time Adjunct Assistant Professor at Parsons, and&nbsp;she is an academic triple threat, with an M.F.A.&nbsp;from&nbsp; Parsons, a B.A. in Anthropology and Art History from Brandeis, and Post-Baccalaureate Fine Arts degree, also from Brandeis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is also an accomplished sculptor, so it is not surprising to find her at the nexus of teaching and making.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1669\" src=\"https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_PersonalSymbol_2dto3D_Regan3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18147\" style=\"width:419px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_PersonalSymbol_2dto3D_Regan3-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_PersonalSymbol_2dto3D_Regan3-1-768x1068.jpg 768w, https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_PersonalSymbol_2dto3D_Regan3-1-1104x1536.jpg 1104w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I mention that I was intrigued by the Space\/Material course, because it seemed both concrete and conceptual. &nbsp; And apparently I have said the right thing, because Zubko falls on this dichotomy with zest:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve definitely hit the nail on the head. &nbsp; On the one hand, it\u2019s a very concrete course, tons of materials and methods.&nbsp; You know, hoping to build out that toolbox for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other, it\u2019s an exploration of identity and one\u2019s place in the world.&nbsp; The course description promises a triad, looking at three types of space: haptic (related to touch); inhabited (lived in or occupied space); and social and environmental (related to society and the natural world).&nbsp; So in a sense, it seems to follow an invitation implicit in nature: if there is a space, what do we do to fill it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zubko\u2019s entr\u00e9e to the Materiality program was a woodworking course that she taught before the Parsons First Year program was fully developed, and when the first year student body numbered some 300 (today it is over 1000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her approach is both extremely sophisticated\u2014she cites the&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bauhaus us as a foundational movement\u2014and extremely practical\u2014&#8221;they&#8217;re learning how to physically construct things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The class begins by responding to a prompt feels like both a beginning and something that will open up in the rest of their post-Parsons lives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat do you need to feel that you can take creative risks and make your best work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also learning how not to default to obvious choices:&nbsp; \u201cI\u2019m looking at everything as a concept. So if I&#8217;m thinking of sewing, your first idea is going to be needle-thread-fabric. But really it&#8217;s two planar materials, and you&#8217;re poking holes with a thinner linear material.&nbsp; Or, like a flange or a hinge that would put two planer pieces together.&nbsp; You can make that out of anything that you can fold. It doesn&#8217;t have to be a piece of metal that you bought.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which sounds almost\u2014primitive\u2014and perhaps that\u2019s part of the point.&nbsp; Before everything was easy for us, how were these challenges met?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd then there&#8217;s a conversation around, when is glue appropriate, versus when you just are freaking out, and you&#8217;re throwing glue on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am humbled: I am <em>always<\/em> the person who just throws glue on it; and even that doesn\u2019t work too well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And from this very practical approach comes the essential principle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReally kind of breaking things down and then asking the students \u2018Okay, what is it you&#8217;re trying to solve for? And what is going to be the thing that helps you get to it?\u2019\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These conceptual and practical skills are taught in an ascending array of projects that introduce new materials and new problems.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2096\" height=\"2560\" src=\"https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleFinal-openANDclosedCONCEPT_Niki_Achitoff-Gray.t-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18149\" style=\"width:451px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleFinal-openANDclosedCONCEPT_Niki_Achitoff-Gray.t-scaled.jpg 2096w, https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleFinal-openANDclosedCONCEPT_Niki_Achitoff-Gray.t-1638x2000.jpg 1638w, https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleFinal-openANDclosedCONCEPT_Niki_Achitoff-Gray.t-768x938.jpg 768w, https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleFinal-openANDclosedCONCEPT_Niki_Achitoff-Gray.t-1258x1536.jpg 1258w, https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleFinal-openANDclosedCONCEPT_Niki_Achitoff-Gray.t-1677x2048.jpg 1677w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2096px) 100vw, 2096px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe usually start with something flat or drawing, because that&#8217;s a nice way in that they all feel pretty comfortable with so I have them make<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>symbols about how they perceive themselves, so they&#8217;ll learn about line and shape and how that can start to communicate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next stage involves translating the symbols into wire\u2014I say that this makes me think of Alexander Calder.&nbsp; And then they move into mechanical drawing.&nbsp; \u201cSo they&#8217;re learning orthographic views and axonometric views, and we take their symbol, and then we extrude it out on the paper.&nbsp; And then the last step of the project is, we actually build it three dimensionally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you remember that novel <em>Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions<\/em>?&nbsp; It was issued as a trendy trade paperback in the 70s, but in fact was a satirical novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott, first published in 1884.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zubko\u2019s process seems designed to get students to rediscover for themselves the substance of the world we live in in both playful and serious ways.&nbsp; Just as <em>Flatland<\/em> got us thinking about what a miracle a third dimension was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tell her\u2014as a materiality neophyte&#8211;that I find the progression very exciting.&nbsp; Zubko\u2019s goals reflect her teaching philosophy \u201cstatement of purpose\u201d which includes \u201clearn how to create a system of abstractions as well as building one idea off of the next.\u201d&nbsp; And \u201cresourcefulness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On that subject, she says she loves pointing out to students that great things can be made from modest materials.&nbsp; \u201c I want them to learn what choices they&#8217;re making. And to know that triangle&#8211;time, money, quality.&nbsp; Like, if I show them projects where people bought stuff from the 99-cent store, and you would never know, because [the makers] have taken the time to completely transform it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2471\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleDevelopment_Niki_Achitoff-Gray_1-2471x3000.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18150\" style=\"width:428px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleDevelopment_Niki_Achitoff-Gray_1-2471x3000.jpeg 2471w, https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleDevelopment_Niki_Achitoff-Gray_1-1647x2000.jpeg 1647w, https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleDevelopment_Niki_Achitoff-Gray_1-768x933.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleDevelopment_Niki_Achitoff-Gray_1-1265x1536.jpeg 1265w, https:\/\/parsons.edu\/undergrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/SM_CollapsibleDevelopment_Niki_Achitoff-Gray_1-1687x2048.jpeg 1687w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2471px) 100vw, 2471px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This seems an especially important message for students, who often have soaring imaginations, and limited means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo they&#8217;re starting to build with each thing a skill that then they&#8217;ll be able to adapt and apply to the next.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach feels almost like rotations in medical school, which help students discover what types of healers they want to be.&nbsp; In this case, space and materiality help them to understand what types of makers they might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I ask Zubko what\u2019s her greatest satisfaction as a teacher.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen a student really surprises themselves that they were able to make something.&nbsp; Because, of course, I know they can.
