This workshop introduces students to zero-waste design methodologies through the practical exercise of constructing a tote bag from a single rectangular piece of fabric.<\/strong>\u00a0The project demonstrates how measurement constraints and intentional layout planning can be integrated into the design process to achieve complete material utilization. Students will apply concepts of efficient production and fabrication while engaging with the technical aspects of pattern development and assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants will explore foundational skills in seam allowance calculation, fabric consumption analysis, and the sequencing of sewing construction steps. Core technical competencies\u2014including basic machine stitching, scale measurement, and pressing\u2014will be reinforced through an iterative process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the conclusion of the workshop, students will have developed an understanding of zero-waste design principles and their application in product development. The exercise emphasizes the relationship between design intent, technical execution, and material stewardship within contemporary fashion and product design contexts.

*This workshop has a capacity of 16 students.<\/strong>

While all materials will be provided, it is recommended to bring a pair of scissors.\u00a0<\/em>

The workshop will be taught by fashion industry veterans, Tiffany Pek and Seenae Yi, who have both worked in technical design and product development for over a decade.\u00a0 See bios below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n



Tiffany Pek:<\/strong>
Tiffany is a part-time lecturer in the First-Year Studies program. She brings over 15 years of experience in the fashion industry, specializing in technical design and product development with a strong focus on sustainable product transformation. Throughout her career, Tiffany has contributed to leading brands including John Bartlett, Talbots, John Varvatos, Haute Hippie, Theory, NY & Co, Anne Klein, and most recently Ralph Lauren. Her expertise bridges industry practice and academic insight, preparing students to engage with both creative and responsible approaches to design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n



Seenae Yi:<\/strong>
With nearly two decades of experience in New York City’s fashion industry, Seenae Yi has honed her expertise as a patternmaker and technical designer for leading fashion brands. A graduate of the Chicago School of the Art Institute, she is trained in fashion design. Seenae has collaborated with renowned designers including Dion Lee, Monse, and DKNY, and currently serves as a technical designer at Helmut Lang.
