In this project, we were first asked to choose a fruit and vegetable, and then each group were asked to pick a shape. Afterwards, we were to create a cast form and experiment with subdividing the polyhedron into a structure that complements the natural contours of different foods out of our desired materials to work with. My group chose to work with hexagons. In Casting Pumpkins, I chose to cast pumpkins out of plaster. I chose plaster as the material for the cast forms because I wanted to work with something new. I also thought that the outcome would turn out really cool. I went with subdividing my large form vertically. I added watercolor paint to my plaster mixture to make my forms look like pumpkins. As for the “skin” or outer covering of the cast forms, I used the polypropylene fabric that was a found leftover material as I thought the colors on the textile resemble the colors of a pumpkin. I found the texture of the textile very interesting as it gives a touch of organic feeling of how an actual pumpkin is.
