A watch-like sculpture inspired by the exoskeleton of a turtle. It consists of two layers. The top layer is the “Outer shell” of a turtle inspired by the traditional Japanese Kumiko design. It is made of precisely cut soft pine and colored yarns. The bottom layer is also made of yarn and soft pine wood, illustrating its exoskeleton structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes this piece special is that I was able to incorporate both traditional Japanese design elements and what I like, (marine creatures). Furthermore, during the process, I was able to meet new people not only to gain inspiration and feedback but also to learn new techniques to execute each operation. Without these people, I would not have been able to create such a product as showcased in this exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason I named this project “EN” is because I am from Japan, and in Japanese terms, the word “EN”\/ \u7e01 holds a meaning of fate. As you can see, I have used red yarn for the main design pattern of its body, as there is a belief in East Asia that red yarn symbolizes fate between people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this being said, in the final weeks of completing this project, I went through both a breakup in a relationship and the death of one of my close relatives, making it one of the worst weeks that I have undergone in my life. Although completing this project was not in an ideal environment, I am thankful for all the events that occurred, as they opened up countless doors to new opportunities and allowed me to meet new talented peers.
