Assignment 2: 3D to 2D: Space + Perspective<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How can flat interfaces (3D modeling software) bring complex three-dimensional forms to life? How can we design objects that challenge the way we perceive depth and space? With 3D to 2D: Space + Perspective, we will explore the interplay between digital tools and fabrication, focusing on the role of spatial reasoning in using 2D interfaces to make 3D objects. For this project, we will design “impossible shapes”\u2014 3D forms that, when viewed from specific angles or lighting, appear as flat, 2D designs. Through this we will develop a deeper understanding of perspective, geometry, and the technical process of 3D fabrication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Objective <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This assignment challenges you to design an object or set of objects that allow for three distinct interpretations when viewed from different angles or under different lighting conditions. You may create a single object with multiple illusionary perspectives (e.g. a shadow cube with three sides) or a series of three objects, each producing its own optical illusion with conceptually cohesive theme. This will push you to think critically about how 3D forms are perceived when flattened into 2D images through different perspectives in space.
