I constructed a corset to both create the idea of a fake body as well as play into the fake aspects of eating disorder culture and the misogynistic ideals that are expected of women’s body images. I selected colors reminiscent of muscle and blood and created a three dimensional rib structure to overlay out of a gold metallic satin as a commentary on the idea that society prizes the concept of skinniness. Further, the extruding ribs serve to act as a social “cage” in which culturally women are trapped by the rigid bodily expectations imposed upon them. The choker is a more direct reference, depicting the stifling nature of the societal demands that women are faced with in terms of contending with harmful image rhetoric.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":19282,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":true,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[77],"class_list":["post-19278","student-work","type-student-work","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-integrative-studio-seminar-1","tag-fake"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\nEmma Schmidt -
