As someone who experiences gender dysphoria, I often feel trapped by other peoples perceptions of my body. Sometimes I even feel like I look different every time I look in the mirror. I knew for the conceptual self portrait I wanted to represent the horror of not recognizing yourself while trying to fit in with others perceptions. I chose to do a triptych of three figures pushing at the walls of a box to represent how no matter what form you take, no one can force themselves in a box. I think the medium I chose (linocut prints) emphasizes this theme because the process itself requires repetition. For the figures, I took inspiration from Matisse and flattened the figures, placing them in uncomfortable positions. The exaggerated proportions fill the space and emphasize the box shape while also pushing the idea of body dysmorphia.
