AT HOME IN UTOPIA
\n<\/strong>Documentary Film by Michal Goldman<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the mid-1920s, thousands of immigrant Jewish garment workers catapulted themselves out of the urban slums and ghettos by pooling their resources and building cooperatively owned and run apartment complexes in the Bronx. Adjacent to the newly opened subway corridor and in the midst of empty fields, they constructed the United Workers Cooperative Colony, known as the Coops, where they practiced the utopian ideals of an equitable and just society. The film captures their epic struggle across two generations as the Coops\u00a0residents experiment with breaking\u00a0down barriers of race and ethnicity.\u00a0At Home in Utopia<\/em>\u00a0raises issues of economic justice and race relations that are very relevant to the present\u00a0circumstances.\u00a0The\u00a0film will be\u00a0followed by a\u00a0discussion with film director Michal Goldman and Ed Yaker from the Amalgamated Housing Cooperative. This event has been organized by\u00a0Parsons\u00a0Housing Justice Lab<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0collaboration with\u00a0Parsons Graduate Urban Programs<\/a>, the\u00a0Urban Homesteading\u00a0Assistance Board<\/a>\u00a0(UHAB) and the\u00a0Local\u00a0Initiatives Support Corporation<\/a>\u00a0(LISC).\u00a0This event is free and open to\u00a0students, faculty and the general public.<\/p>\n
