Big Talk: A digital aid for public speaking

Rebecca Gill Clarke

My thesis, Big Talk, concentrates on building a digital platform to tackle the key phases of public speaking, from the preparation stage to the final performance, in a form which is universally accessible through the web.

By fusing speech recognition technology and spaced repetition techniques, the tool is versatile enough to be used to practice for any high-pressure public speaking situation, whether it be a job interview, an audition, a presentation, or even a wedding speech.

The most common pitfalls related to public speaking are centered around insecurities about your knowledge of the subject matter and a lack of habitual, verbalised practice. The Leitner System is a widely used method of flashcard learning, and Big Talk leverages this effective form of memorization.

By providing a central base for users to prepare and reuse content as well as gain that crucial opportunity to rehearse repeatedly beforehand, Big Talk can help users feel confident in the fact that they’re fully prepared for the task ahead of them.
