DIARY OF A COMMUNITY is a collection of words, sounds, photos, and resources created to document, archive, and preserve the Elmhurst community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Elmhurst, Queens is the epicenter of the Coronavirus in NYC, and is also my hometown.
Rather than claiming this as my project, I only claim the title of organizer.
This diary is not only a place of documentation, but also as a place where people can share struggles, silver linings, hopes, and general news and clipping of how our lives have been affected. I want this to serve as a place where people can share struggles, silver linings, hopes, and general news and clipping of how our lives have been affected.
What started as a project about gentrification turned into a project about localized documentation of a community facing challenges in every aspect from gentrification to financial stability.
Most of my content is generated not only from phone calls and my already existing material, but also from social media. I am part of various groups on Facebook that my Elmhurst community has created, so when someone makes a post about the virus, I message them privately and ask if they would like to be included in my project.. I also decided to link some other projects parallel to mine such as Queens Memory so people could get a broader scope if they wished. This taught me how to get creative with sourcing content ethically and resourcefully.
