Proximate

Lily Wang

Proximate is a collaborative music installation that creates moments where participants can appreciate participatory creation and the joy of making music together. Participants enter a responsive environment where video tracking is used to locate moving objects and measure interpersonal distance. The data is then sent to a computer to be used to modify the music. It is an exercise of cooperation, from the start participants need to adjust to the actions of the other.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has forced people to be physically apart. When the danger passes, and people can rejoin one another, we will have a whole new perspective on interpersonal distance. Proximate will act as a mediator to challenge participants to invite one another to leave the periphery and share personal space. It aims to create a participatory experience through collaboration and an opportunity to consider technology as a medium to spark connections between people in real life.
