The Last Peach Blossom

Ziyuan Wang

The Last Peach Blossom is a short animated film and a series of stories that illustrate a speculative fiction about chasing an ancient Chinese symbol, the peach blossom spring – a utopian place in ancient Chinese literature, in a futuristic scenario.

The purpose of this project is to imagine the contemporary evolution of an ancient Chinese story and design a speculative future with a sustainable but sinister version of the relationship between humans and nature.

You can read the whole fiction in the publication channel.

This work aims to have an impact outside Chinese society. It conveys the values that could be applied to human beings as a community of shared futures. Through fiction, I want to communicate an idealized relationship between humans and nature echoing the one in the original peach blossom spring.

Human desire is the impetus of economic and scientific progress, but it also leads to exploitation and waste of resources. We do not use the resources available to us with respect or responsibility. We mistakenly believe that what we buy is what we own and brutally occupy and waste it.

History of Trunk is a backstory of The Last Peach Blossom. It's about speculative design and world-building. See it here.
