Neungsohwa Over the Walls

Project Website

A collaboration between Xander Thornborough, Dabin Lee, and Hyejin Jang.

Explore a piece of Korean history and uncover a story of those too often forgotten in this virtual reality game built for Oculus Quest.

You play as a gungnyeo — a palace servant — and must search for clues in the space around you in order to save your friend. Interact with and learn about historically-based furniture and objects. Explore the servants’ quarters, see aspects of their daily lives, and sit in the queen’s chambers in a recreation of 18th century Changdeokgung Palace.

With Neungsohwa Over the Walls, our hope is twofold: to expose an American audience that likely has little experience with Korean history whatsoever to a vivid representation of it. And to recover the lost voices of anonymous figures like the gungnyeo.
