The geophony of the ocean has dramatically changed since the Industrial Revolution and the emergence of global capitalism. Our data confirms that human activity has significantly amplified the amount of sonic energy in this highly complex acoustic environment. We lack the sensory capacity to fully comprehend the gravity of the situation. Optical Resistance to Sonic Violence is an interactive installation that demonstrates the negative effects of anthropogenic noise on marine ecosystems. My intention is to put into conversation the poetic and the didactic by raising awareness of the unintended, invisible consequences of human activity on naturally occurring soundscapes which are a direct result of the capitalist fantasy of infinite growth.
