My Hoang

Game Designer/Producer, Art Director
I love making games, creating art and materializing my dreams. My work ranges from games and UX/UI design to graphic design and illustration.

I find inspiration from simple things in life such as everyday activities or events that left an emotional impact on me, from trauma, depression to bliss and glory, and incorporate a lot of my emotions into my work. For my thesis project, I’ve incorporated my own as well as others’ struggles growing up in a traditional Asian household.

Aside from work, I'm a performing arts enthusiast. In my free time I like to sing, dance, perform and listen to music.

Features

  • Listen to the nostalgic sound of mom’s insults and family yelling every time you make a mistake
  • Hide your problems (e.g. bad grades) and personal desires (like a love interest!) to avoid being disowned
  • Find space for your things and yourself in a family culture that has your priorities at the bottom
  • And lastly…idk…maybe get some family therapy and heal yourself because you are enough and you deserve to be truly loved and cared for by those closest to you 💖

Concept & Intent

Fitting Burdens is a narrative 2D organization puzzle game that demonstrates some struggles and coping mechanisms of living and growing up in an Asian household, inspired by experiences of my own and others’ from the same culture.

Narrative Structure & Level Progression

The game has 25 levels in total and is divided into 3 stages: Happy Childhood, Troubling Teenage Years and Moving On. There are cutscenes in between each level to convey the narrative better. The player experiences the life of a young Vietnamese girl through doing everyday activities like chores or packing books to go to school. The narrative slowly expands as her environment and dynamics in the relationship with her family changes.
