Mucho Que Declarar

Technology can play a vital function in a critical moment by creating a space for distraction and sharing information with others. For immigrants, technology has also created a space for sharing hidden stories and new knowledge about their situation in a foreign country. When crossing the U.S. border, many immigrants are harassed and/or put in detention. What happens when technology isn’t at one’s disposal in those times? Electronic devices are usually confiscated when detained. What can they rely on?

With my project I want to help people see the problem. To do this, I have created an activist product to create as much awareness as I can. A survival kit that aids Latino immigrants in U.S. border spaces, specifically at airports, when they are in stressful and difficult situations. Drawing on personal experience, as well as drawing on the primary research I performed with other Latino immigrants who have been through the same experience, I carefully curated the kit to include the essentials for those in need.
