The work of Parsons School of Fashion students, Weijing Xiao (BFA Fashion Design) and Bonan Li (AAS Fashion Design), are featured in a new exhibition Transmissions: Heritage and New Creation at the Museo Cristóbal Balenciaga in Getaria, Spain. The exhibit, which is the culmination of Balenciaga’s two-year long program involving students from numerous design schools worldwide, opened December 3, 2021 and will run through February 27, 2022.
The Transmissions project introduces students to the philosophy, technique and life of Cristóbal Balenciaga through research, reflection and creation. Participants studied the luxury fashion house’s history, particularly its contributions to the revolution of the silhouette, through the museum archives and developed their own creative projects in response. Of over 500 creative proposals, 41 were selected to be exhibited in the museum, including those of BFA Fashion Design student Weijing Xiao and AAS Fashion Design student Bonan Li.
Students and faculty from the participating schools, including Professor Emeritus Francesca Sammaritano, share reflections on the project and processes involved. Selects of Weijing’s and Bonan’s work can be viewed below, and the complete collection of exhibiting students’ works can be viewed on the virtual Transmissions exhibit page.
