Environmental Justice as a Civil Right was originally launched as Antigua and Barbuda’s inaugural National Pavilion at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale in May of 2018. It is adapted to the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries as the second Venice Biennale exhibition to be presented at The New School. The exhibition is an investigation into the acute crisis of climate change facing the small island nation of Antigua and Barbuda and a search for solutions.
Curated by Barbara Paca, O.B.E., Cultural Envoy to the Ministry of Culture, Antigua and Barbuda, Visiting Scholar at the Tishman Environment and Design Center; in association with Prof. Nina Khrushcheva, Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs at The New School.
Environmental Justice as a Civil Right is realized in a collaboration with The New School’s Tishman Environment and Design Center and Parsons School of Design. The New School served as one of the sponsors and collaborators of the original installation at the Venice Biennale and also coordinated a student program with N.Y. filmmaker Vanessa H. Smith and The Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs allowing students from Antigua, Barbuda, Manhattan, and Venice to collaborate and participate via online video conference calls.
