A Week With Kiki is a VR experience for prospective cat owners to learn essential and lesser-known aspects of pet care. It provides opportunities of experiencing the situations one faces when taking care of a pet.
The idea originally came from the experience of taking care of a friend’s cat for two weeks. Researching pet care information can be essential but sometimes tricky. By creating an immersive environment, we hope that this project can provide an alternative way of learning and information delivery. This project is using Oculus Quest as the development platform.
“Learning petcare information online is good but I want to somehow experience it. ”
—— Sarah, 26 years old, student
The VR experience we built is aimed to provide a way of learning through trial and error. The goal is to take care of a 2-year-old cat named Kiki and deal with different situations. With the VR headset, users are allowed to explore, engage, and perform tasks, which ultimately enables a more well-rounded way to understand the content. They are able to pour food into the bowl, clean the room, interact with the cat, and raycast the interface to get detailed information of a cat.
The main experience is divided into seven days. Each day has new tasks unlocked and a daily goal for users to achieve, such as feeding, cleaning, playing, and finding a cat sitter. Once users do the tasks right and pet or play with Kiki often, Kiki develops more reactions such as kneading and rubbing. However, if the user didn't complete the tasks nor spending enough time with Kiki, the bad scenarios might come up. Within the length of a week, we want to let users walk away with the mindset of how it would be like if they are getting a cat. Through this experience, we hope users not only learn the basic knowledge of taking care of a cat, but also the responsibility that comes along.
