The Open Style Lab at The New School, Parsons School of Design

The collaboration between Open Style Lab, a nonprofit organization, and The New School, Parsons School of Design, aims to increase the participation and inclusion of people with disabilities, aging, to challenge the standards of accessibility through universal design-focused education. OSL at Parsons is the leading hub where universal design meets style for social impact.

FALL 2020

Thesis 1: Systems Adaptive – 3321 – PUFD 4220 – S2 (Senior Thesis for BFA Fashion)

Integrative Research and Development – 3005 – PSDS 3100 – B  (BFA)

Who can join classes?

Enrolled Parsons undergraduates or graduate students across from all schools (Fashion, Product Design, Design studies, Fine Arts, TransD, Design & Technology, Architecture etc). Clients are selected through an interview process. Occupational or Physical therapists are also welcome to join to volunteer their time as well as get field experience to help shape and impact the classroom.

Past Student Work Includes:

  • A voice amplifying wearable necklace created with a person with multiple sclerosis.

  • A rain jacket that fits into a backpack adapted for an electric wheelchair.

  • A wool coat that was custom shaped for posture with a person with cerebral palsy.

  • An inflatable vest for seated comfort for a person with a curved spine due to bone cancer.

  • Leggings for the seated body that has easy access to a catheter.
