Parley for the Oceans visits Sustainable Systems classes

First Year faculty Beau Rhee introduces the organization Parley for the Oceans

On October 23rd in Wollman Hall, First Year faculty member Beau Rhee invited the organization Parley for the Oceans whose members spoke with Sustainable Systems about their Ocean Plastics AIR (Avoid Intercent Redesign) materials. The conference was design focused, and Parley spoke about their large-scale collaborations with Adidas and brands like Helmut Lang and Proenza Schouler. Parley take plastic waste from the ocean and have a supply chain where they upcycle it, essentially to hi-end material. Beau’s Sustainable Systems inflection (the lens through which sustainability is taught in the course) is “Materials” and so the work that Parley are doing was a great link for students.

About Parley:
Parley is the space where creators, thinkers and leaders come together to raise awareness for the beauty and fragility of our oceans and collaborate on projects that can end their destruction. Parley for the Oceans addresses major threats towards our oceans, the most important ecosystem of our planet. We believe the power for change lies in the hands of the consumer – given he has a choice – and the power to shape this new consumer mindset lies in the hands of the creative industries. Parley will share products and collaborations made with Ocean Plastic® – a range of materials created from upcycled plastic waste intercepted from open ocean, remote shorelines, beaches, underwater habitats and in coastal communities. As a catalyst for awareness, funding and eco-innovation, Ocean Plastic® provides an immediate replacement for virgin plastic and transforms plastic waste into symbols of change.”

Guest speakers from Parley for the Oceans present their work and discuss with First Year Sustainable Systems students.
