This workshop introduces students to zero-waste design methodologies through the practical exercise of constructing a tote bag from a single rectangular piece of fabric. The project demonstrates how measurement constraints and intentional layout planning can be integrated into the design process to achieve complete material utilization. Students will apply concepts of efficient production and fabrication while engaging with the technical aspects of pattern development and assembly.
Participants will explore foundational skills in seam allowance calculation, fabric consumption analysis, and the sequencing of sewing construction steps. Core technical competencies—including basic machine stitching, scale measurement, and pressing—will be reinforced through an iterative process.
By the conclusion of the workshop, students will have developed an understanding of zero-waste design principles and their application in product development. The exercise emphasizes the relationship between design intent, technical execution, and material stewardship within contemporary fashion and product design contexts.
*This workshop has a capacity of 16 students.
While all materials will be provided, it is recommended to bring a pair of scissors.
The workshop will be taught by fashion industry veterans, Tiffany Pek and Seenae Yi, who have both worked in technical design and product development for over a decade. See bios below:
