Prompt: We had to create a unique structure that was at least 12" using any materials.

I wanted to use this structure assignment as an opportunity to experiment within my major. The idea came from a place of practicality. Coming from the South I was sorely unprepared for the winter, and I needed a heavier coat. I started by drafting my own flat pattern for a jacket, keeping in mind materials I already had. I took curtains I sourced from thrift stores in Atlanta and left over materials from my senior fashion collection. Keeping in line with the assignment prompt- structure- I payed carful attention to how I constructed the garment. Because the materials I chose were stiff, I designed the pattern with appropriate darts and curves. I chose to use flat fell seams for a more professional finish. From the zipper, to the hood, to the lining, every detail of this project was by design. This project means a lot to me because it represents a connection: a jacket for New York made from materials sourced in Atlanta.
