Prompt: Make an art or design work in response to a contemporary event of your choice. For the kind of response you want to explore in your own project, use the work and type of response by the historical artist you researched as a model. You will need to demonstrate how the event you chose and the artist’s response parallel your own.

This work is inspired by the Brutalist architecture movement, as well as the French Industrial Revolution painter Gustave Caillebotte. Using this architecture movement’s emphasis on functionality/lack of ornamentation and cold, sleek aesthetics, as well as the depiction of the working class wearing suits in Caillebotte’s paintings, I am responding to the current struggle of a sense of being trapped in a cycle of work, and the lack of time for anything outside of it. I created a suit in reference to Caillebotte’s figures and blended this with brutalist motifs, such as horizontal and zigzag lines. These lines across the front of the body are detachable, representing the trapped feeling and the subsequent escape from the cycle, depicted in the silent video aspect of this final project.
