Run Horse Run
Prompt: This was an art activism piece that was location focused and needed to include text.
For our project, we wanted to focus on the horses of Central Park. These horses have been around for 200 years, being used in NYC as a tourist attraction, but times have changed. Recent incidents have brought to people’s attention how poorly these horses have been treated. The cars, pollution, overworking, and just the noise are terrible for these horses. In the past year, two horses have passed, and laws have been starting to get more traction. For our artist inspiration, we had Christopher Wool. His art plays with text and how you read it. His piece “Run Dog Run” was our main inspiration for this project, and we went pretty much straight from that. The piece we made is from a stencil we made and cut out, and then we put oats in the stencil and pulled it up. What is fun is that it’s fully legal, and the horses can eat the oats; however, the birds are the ones who really get to them.
