"Deformed?"

Class of: 2029

Major: Illustration BFA

Medium: Mixed media sculpture

Faculty: Carol Peligian

Prompt: The prompt for this project was to create a sculpture showcasing a body part you hold sacred or reinventing a body part.

This piece displays a life accurate depiction of my torso, highlighting my scoliosis. As someone who grew up on watch for severe scoliosis, wore a brace, and almost had to get surgery to straighten it out, I wanted this piece to emphasize all of the handling that has been had on my spine to “fix” it. The torso is sectioned in a way that when the viewer pulls on the top, the spine stretches out and looks straight. However, the torso looks less human when pulled out, showing the gaps in my body if my spine was not the way it was. With this prompt, I ended up making a piece that showed what some people consider a deformity, and reinterpreting it into something sacred. It became a tribute to my spine.
