First Year Workshop: Hand-building with Nerikomi technique with Michiko Shimada

Discover the mesmerizing world of Nerikomi, a traditional Japanese pottery technique that transforms colored clay into intricate, layered patterns. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to create stunning marbled and geometric designs by stacking, slicing, and assembling richly colored clay. Unlike other types of surface decorations, Nerikomi uses colored clays to create visual complexity that runs through the entire form. Students will engage with both the technical and aesthetic aspects of the process, learning how to design with intent, control form and pattern, and understand the behavior of colored clay during construction. This workshop is open to students of all skill levels.

Things to bring:

– Plastic container for water (small bucket, yogurt container, takeout food container, etc)

– Apron (or come wearing clothes you don’t mind getting clay on)

– Rulers

The First Year program will provide all other materials!
