Take a Seat
Prompt: Students will work in groups of 2 or 3 (depends on the number of students in this class I will assign the students in each group). Each group will create a Collapsible Modular Set-collection for a Public Seating area for a specific community (each group will decide on the community of choice). The collection will have characteristics representing the community you selected by using forms, colors, materials, function, how it interacts with the human body, etc. You will use a verity of materials, structures, and connection techniques based on what you have learned from the mini assignments and previous projects. Each student in a group will be responsible for making one or more seats as part of the modular set.
For my piece, I wanted to make a stool that could be used in small apartments or around a studio. Two major factors were the ease of use and portability. The stool is made up of half-inch plywood and metal hinges as well as rope. When carrying the stool it resembles the silhouette of a tote bag which is easy to carry. The seat is turned into a handle and the legs collapse together while being held together by velcro. All it takes to transform this stool is a simple act of pulling up on the handles. The stool legs are securely fastened by a rope that is intertwined to each side opposite handle so that the tension created when sitting will push the seat together rather than away. The stool is made for quick use and portability without having to submit to a large footprint.
