Can we be back?
Prompt: Create a fashion styling photoshoot for a cultural commentary.
Due to the coronavirus getting more and more serious in foreign countries like Australia, England, Italy, Japan, America, etc., many of the students that are studying abroad (including me) are trying to get home safe to our parents due to their concerns and our own. However, due to the constant travel from foreign countries back to China, it has caused more cases in different cities in China which created controversies. On a social media called Weibo (Chinese Instagram), there was a student who recorded her process of how hard it was for her to arrive back in China but instead of being welcomed, her comments were filled with negative responses like “Don’t come back to China, you will bring more virus in” or “It would be more patriotic of you not coming back”. It may sound reasonable to think about the health concern in China, but for students like me, it is the only way for us to be back with our family and get the most support even if we do get sick. Thus, trying to portray the helpless situation of being scold by the internet, I wore a long white blouse with gloves and an N95 mask that portray the COVID-19 protection gears. This has become a general style of how many students wear to travel on a plane so I wanted to show this side of the fashion styling part. As for the white card, there is a man-shaped hole in the middle that shows this event in how it has suppressed the right of students and their helplessness to talk against this event. The whole lighting is focused on the subject taken through flash to show the obvious positive and negative space to create an atmosphere of being oppressed.
