Major: Communication Design BFA

Medium: Charcoal

Prompt: The objective of this assignment is to research, conceptualize, draft, and finalize one, two, or three still life “portraits”. The size of each should be ~18” x 24” and should apply techniques of proportion, perspective, and a full range of values. For this project, we will explore symbolism within visual art, and how we can further meaning within our designs using symbolism while developing skills in drawing from life

This drawing explores the relationship between strength, growth, and memory through the combination of worn boots and blooming flowers. The boots suggest movement, experience, and the body’s physical journey, while the flowers represent softness, transformation, and new life. By placing the flowers inside the boots, I wanted to show how growth can emerge from places shaped by time, pressure, and lived experience. The shadows and fallen petals add a sense of memory, suggesting that even as things change, traces of where we have been remain with us.
